I knew it was coming.  Being his facebook friend has some benefits.  I knew it had to be coming with all his posts on his business and all.  However, when I read the headline on Monday, I was still shocked.  And I cried.

Many years ago, I used to complain about sports and how athletes get paid way too much; teachers and firefighters and nurses should be paid these huge salaries.  This frame of mind wasn't winning me any friends.  So I decided to see what all the fuss was about.

I started watching baseball in 2003, and I remember watching that final game in 2003 as Tim Wakefield just stood there, and feeling these conflicting emotions of sadness and anger, and wondering if I had the right to feel that way, not having been a fan for a long time.

2004 came, with a hope and a promise of glory on the pitching arm (and later ankle) of Curt Schilling.  His devotion to the game, his family, and his faith helped to mold me into the Red Sox fan I am today.

Thank you Curt for everything you did in 2004 and 2007.  It was a pleasure to watch you pitch in person many times as a starter and a closer, and to see you record your 200th win.  You are one of my heroes.

I adored him when he played for my beloved Philadelphia Phillies, and I continued to adore him when he played for the Sox.

Definitely one of my heroes too ♥
